![]() Kalaya brings me back to my honeymoon in Thailand, where my husband and I first fell in love with crab curry at Raya Restaurant in Phuket City. Zahav reminds me of my travels in Israel, where the tahini-forward hummus is as creamy as what you’d find in Abu Ghosh’s Lebanese Restaurant. What I love most about the Philadelphia food scene is how the communities who come here from around the world keep their nuanced cuisines intact - an inspiring act of resilience and perseverance when you consider that so many restaurants in Philadelphia (many of which are featured on this 50 Best list) have been able to maintain their culinary traditions over generations and thousands of miles. Over the years, I’ve had a lot of people ask me why I stayed in the Philadelphia region - why didn’t I just move to a bigger city or a remote island beach, or live a nomadic lifestyle? Aside from my emotional attachments to this place, my response was (and still is) that I feel so spoiled to live here, because no matter what meal I eat in various corners of the planet, chances are, I can find it in Philly. The workers are too busy trying to get the orders filled and keep the line moving. ![]() I think one order of 3 shrimp dumplings, or 3 meat dumplings is good for one person, but one order of 3 pork buns is good for 2 people. One order of certain items like pork buns or shrimp dumplings is 3 items. If you don't know the names, compare the pictures with the names. Grab a pink order sheet and pencil, and while you wait in line, circle what you want and then hand the list to the person behind the counter and they will fill it. The line can be long, but you must follow the procedure to keep it moving fast. Buy the food to go and take it to the beach or park. The place is a Hole in the Wall, with no ambience and only four tables. When I'm in the Clement street neighborhood or headed to Land's End or the Sutro Bath/ Ocean Beach area, this is where I stop to get Dim Sum Take Out.
